Construction of White River Lake by the cities of Crosbyton, Ralls, Post, and Spur was completed in 1963, primarily as a long-range and adequate water supply. It has become one of the most popular recreational facilities in West Texas for boaters, skiers, and fishermen alike.

It opened to the public in 1965, and is located 22 miles southeast of Crosbyton, 15 miles west of Spur and 31 miles northeast of Post.
